Homes for Older Persons, and Persons with Disabilities

Care homes that serve residents from historically poor and marginalised communities, often do not have the adequate financial support or resources from residents and their families to contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings. Many of these buildings were built more than 60 years ago. The NPOs who manage these homes are in need of support with equipment and infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.

This includes basic maintenance such as painting, and fixing leaks, while some homes are in need of new kitchen and laundry equipment (gas stoves, fridges, industrial washing machines and tumble dryers), to ensure optimal functioning and to create a comfortable, dignified environment for the residents.

The provision of incontinence products such as adult diapers is an ongoing need for all old age homes and homes for persons with disabilities. Residents may have to use up to four diapers a day. These products are very expensive and depending on the number of residents at the facility, can significantly drive-up operational costs.

In this climate, the provision of incontinence products can leave a deficit in the budget for other necessities, including staffing, transport, and food.
