Support our Safety Parents

Each year, social workers remove thousands of children from environments where their safety and wellbeing are at risk. Once this takes place, it is ordinary people who step in and open their homes to offer a temporary safe, supportive and nurturing space for these children.

October is Social Development month, and Primedia Cares and Cape Talk, in partnership with the Cape Care Fund, are shining a light on the critical role played by Safety Parents. We are calling on residents and businesses to support our safety parents.

What support do Safety Parents need?

When children arrive at the homes of safety parents, they are often traumatised, and frightened. Some children arrive severely neglected and malnourished. Many children arrive with only the clothes on their backs – and even that would be in a poor condition.

Your donation could help make the process more comfortable and dignified for the children as they start onto the path of their healing journey.

What is a Safety Parent?

Safety parents are ordinary people with big heats who play a vital role in the child protection safety net by providing temporary care for vulnerable children. Safety Parents offer a safe, supportive home while court processes and child protection investigations are underway.

Safety Parents can be asked to take in children aged 0 – 17, and become responsible for providing for all of the child’s basic needs during that period. They can care for up to six children at a time.

Becoming a Safety Parent

Those who are interested in signing up to become a safety parent can do so using the online application form. If the application is approved, prospective safety parents, along with all adults on the property, will be vetted against the Child Protection Register, and require police clearance to ensure they are suitable to care for children. They will also undergo training on the Children’s Act, to ensure they fully understand their responsibilities.
